Breaking News: The End of Paper-Based IELTS in Bangladesh – What You Need to Know

If you are a student in Bangladesh planning to study abroad in 2026, there is a major change coming to your university application journey. Starting February 1, 2026, both the British Council and IDP will transition exclusively to IELTS on Computer. The traditional paper-and-pencil exam, which has been the standard for decades, will no longer be available in Bangladesh. At Credenza Education, we know this news might feel a bit sudden. But don’t worry—this shift is actually designed to make your test experience faster, more secure, and more efficient. Why is the Paper-Based Test Disappearing? The shift to a 100% digital format is part of a global move to modernize English language testing. For students in Bangladesh, this means: Faster Results: Instead of waiting 13 days, you’ll get your scores in just 1 to 5 days. This is a life saver if you are rushing to meet a university or visa deadline! More Test Dates: Computer-based tests can be held almost every day, giving you more flexibility. Better Security: Digital delivery reduces the risk of paper leaks and logistical errors. What Stays the Same? It’s important to remember that the difficulty and content of the test are not changing. The Format: You will still be tested on Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. The Scoring: The 0–9 Band scale remains exactly the same. Speaking Test: The Speaking section is still face-to-face with a human examiner. It is not conducted by a computer. Acceptance: Universities in the UK, USA, Canada, and Australia will continue to accept IELTS on Computer just as they did the paper version. How to Prepare for the "Digital Switch" Since you can no longer rely on a pencil and eraser, it’s time to update your study habits. Here is how you can get "Computer-Ready": 1. Master Your Typing Speed In the Writing section, you will be typing on a keyboard. If you are used to writing by hand, start practicing your typing now! The good news? The computer counts your words for you, so you’ll never have to stop and count them manually again. 2. Learn to Highlight on Screen Many students worry they won't be able to "mark up" the text in the Reading section. On the computer, you can still highlight text and make digital notes by right-clicking. 3. Practice with Headphones The Listening test will now be 100% via high-quality headphones. This is actually a major advantage, as it blocks out room noise and allows you to hear the audio clearly. Don't Forget: "Computer-Based" is NOT "IELTS Online" Be careful! Even though the paper test is ending, you still need to go to an official test center to take the Computer-based exam. Important for Visa Seekers: If you are applying for a UKVI visa, you must take the "IELTS for UKVI on Computer" at a secure center. The "IELTS Online" (taken at home) is still not accepted for most visa categories. How Credenza Education is Supporting You At Credenza Education, we are already updating our curriculum to ensure our students are 100% ready for the February 1st deadline.
